The riddle of the Renault name change

The FIA has now confirmed the various name changes in Formula 1 and that, inevitably, leads to a number of questions about the team currently known as Lotus Renault GP. One can understand that if the Virgin team is largely owned by the Marussia car company, which builds cars called Marussias, that the team might might wish to have Marussia F1 cars. One can understand that if the owner of the current Team Lotus has bought the Caterham car company and is going to build lots of road cars called Caterhams, it is logical for his racing team to run F1 cars called Caterhams. But it is not logical that a team called Lotus Renault GP, which is owned by an investment company called Genii, should be allowed to build cars called Lotuses, when there is no clear connection between Genii and Group Lotus, the company that builds Lotus road cars. Obviously there is still another shoe or two to drop in this story, particularly as it was wellknown that several teams were not going to agree to allow a name change for any team involving Lotus CEO Dany Bahar.

For some time there have been rumours in F1 circles that Genii boss Gerard Lopez has been putting together a consortium of Malaysian businessmen and in in the process of acquiring Group Lotus from its owner, Proton Holdings Berhad. This has yet to be confirmed and as Proton is listed on the Bursa Malaysia stock exchange there is, no doubt, some kind of requirement to make a suitable public announcement as soon as any deal is struck. That being said, the F1 teams are not likely to agree to something without having seen some serious paperwork to back up the argument, so I would expect an announcement shortly, even if Proton’s owner, the Malaysian government, wants to keep the deal quiet.

It is worth noting that in recent days Lotus Cars has announced to Companies House that it has satisfied two mortgages and that two new companies called Lotus International Enterprises and Lotus World Enterprises have been registered. Three weeks ago, Gérard Lopez was appointed as a director of Lotus Group and is now on the board, while there are reported to be Genii Capital people at Hethel, doing due diligence. Whatever the legal details, the Formula 1 teams must have been convinced that Lopez is planning to use his team to sell Lotus road cars and that he is in a position to make such commitments.

The idea of Lopez buying a car company is not that strange. he has been chasing an automotive brand for some time, having tried to buy Swedish car maker Saab Automobile from General Motors back at the start of 2010.

In January Lopez said that Group Lotus had agreed a seven-year sponsorship deal with the team and that the car company had an option to take over 50 percent of Lotus Renault GP. The option was for two years. So perhaps Lopez has done a deal to buy Group Lotus and recouped some of the investment by selling the team to himself! No doubt, all the details will come out soon enough

dat komt omdat Proton beursgenoteerd is en als er sprake is van een mogelijke verkoop dan moet dat gemeld worden. dat lopende boekenonderzoek zou dan eigenlijk ook gemeld moeten worden als zijnde koersgevoelige info.

volgens mij geloven jullie het nog niet maar vandaag bij de GP in Abu Dhabi tussen de regels door begrepen van Lopez dat Group Lotus wel degelijk naar Genii zou kunnen gaan. Jacky Stewart is inmiddels actief voor Genii en er is iets aan het gebeuren. formeel wordt alles nog ontkend en het was ook niet waarschijnlijk dat enige bekendmaking rond de GP nu zou zijn.

Robert Kubica was paid by Lotus Renault in 2011, Formula One team owner Gerard Lopez has revealed.

His comments to Germany's Auto Motor und Sport follow reports that the Enstone based team may be happier to choose between Vitaly Petrov, Bruno Senna and Romain Grosjean for next season's line-up.

Genii's Lopez however said that with injured Pole Kubica nearing recovery from his horror rally crash injuries, it is wrong to suggest Renault prefers pay drivers.

"If Robert is on the market then of course we will take him," he said. "Our commercial model requires success on the tracks.

"Also we paid Robert's salary this year, although he drove no races with us."

Last week, some media reports suggested team boss Eric Boullier was firm with an end of October deadline, even though Kubica may only be ready to decide his comeback for 2012 some weeks later.

"We will look at the matter at the beginning of November," Lopez clarifies. "Robert will have a car to show us what he can do.

"The data analysis is now so good that you can see with another car whether he is physically able to return."

As for paddock suggestions that Genii is running Renault more as a business rather than a racing team looking for results, Lopez firmly denied it.

And the rumours about being late in engine payments to Renault Sport Formula 1?: "We have paid every bill on time," he insisted.

"We have increased the team from 480 to 520 employees, we have expanded the wind tunnel from 50 to 60 percent and are about to install a new simulator. These are not things you do if you only have the business in mind."

Genii Capital-eigenaar Gerard Lopez is bezig een consortium op te zetten voor een machtsovername bij Group Lotus. De reden hiervoor is dat Lopez de naam van Lotus Renault GP wil veranderen en daar niet veel medewerking bij krijgt van de andere teams omdat Dany Bahar de baas is bij Group Lotus. Dat schrijft gerenommeerd journalist Joe Saward op zijn blog.

Bahar werkte in het verleden in de Formule 1 bij Sauber, Red Bull Racing en Ferrari. In die tijd heeft hij blijkbaar weinig vrienden gemaakt in de paddock, aangezien niemand hem wil helpen bij de naamswijziging. Daarom heeft Lopez een groep samen gesteld om Group Lotus te kopen van Proton. Proton is een Maleisisch staatsbedrijf en om tot overeenstemming te komen zijn mensen nodig die de overheid gunstig gezind zijn. Dat verklaart de aanwezigheid van Tan Sri Syed Mokthar en Tan Sri Arumugan in het consortium. Dat zijn grote ondernemers in Maleisië die veel samenwerken met de regering. Op die manier probeert Lopez de Maleisische overheid te paaien zodat het instemt met de verkoop van Group Lotus, waardoor in de Formule 1 de situatie met twee teams met de naam Lotus eindelijk opgelost kan worden.

Group Lotus wordt mede-eigenaar van het F1-team van Renault (en misschien waren ze dat al) en mag de constructeursnaam veranderen in Lotus. Renault was al geen eigenaar meer van het F1-team. Group Lotus gaat hecht samenwerken met de Renault-tussenpauzen van flitskapitalist Genii Capital, dat ook een groot belang neemt in de autofabrikant. Het verhaal gaat zelfs dat Genii-bazen Gérard Lopez en Eric Lux nu de grote mannen achter het merk Lotus worden.
