Lotus boss Dany Bahar has admitted to evo that much of the company’s development of new models has been suspended following the Malaysian government’s decision to sell its majority stake in Proton. 

It’s only three months since evo spent a day with the Lotus CEO at Hethel, where rumours of Proton’s desire to get rid of the British sportscar brand seemed to be effectively disproved by the fact that Bahar had just signed a new four-year contract. 

But only a few weeks later, Lotus’s future was thrown into turmoil when the Malaysian 
Government sold its 42.7 per cent stake in Proton to a large Malaysian industrial
 conglomerate (DRB-Hicom), which then bought a further seven per cent of Proton’s shares on
 the open market.

During our exclusive interview in Geneva, Bahar told evo that he was ‘completely taken aback’ when he heard the news, especially when it became clear that, under Malaysian takeover regulations, the whole Proton Group would enter a three month ‘lockdown’ where only normal trading activities could be continued, and anything outside normal business would have to be suspended. 

The result at Lotus is that while car production has continued (at a reduced level), much of the company’s R&D work on new models has had to be delayed. This has led to a pushed back launch date for the new Exige S (for which there are already 400 orders in the bag) and the Evora GTE – plus a possible six month delay in the launch of the Esprit, now not expected until early 2014.

And Lotus’s future plans also depend on DRB-Hicom wanting to retain Lotus at the end of this ‘due diligence’ window. To try and ensure it does, Bahar is currently flying to Kuala Lumpur every Monday to talk company representatives through Lotus’ plans and the five-year programme it had agreed with Proton two years ago.

‘This difficult period for Lotus finishes at the end of March and that’s 
when we will know then whether DRB-Hicom will want to continue with our 
business plan,’ Bahar admits, ‘I really hope they will but I cannot call it at the moment, it’s still 50:50.’

Whatever happens, Lotus continues to push on with all of its motorsport
activities, the opening of its Regent Street Lotus Store in June and will be
 the featured marque at the Goodwood Festival of Speed this year.
But with so much work already put into the reinvention of Lotus, many of the brand’s fans will be hoping the company gets the green light it needs from DRB-Hicom to stay in business.

Er is heel wat werk aan de winkel. Maar het ziet er toch maar somber uit.

Aan het imago wel, maar aan echte veranderingen ?

Good to see You guys are acting as if nothing is wrong !!!! Maybe the world should know that all Lotus staff at Hethel are working only 2 days a week no cars are being made and no one has a clue what the future holds !!! As usual Lotus / Proton / DRB Hicom playing Russian roulette with peoples lives !!!! and not giving a F*ck about all the hard working family's who have supported Lotus through thick and thin !!! How do you guys sleep at night !!!!

There has been no production since mid January and staff have not been told why ? Moral is at an all time low and many people were laid off this month.

Staff have been told that there are orders to fill and cars to build, but at present the banks are not releasing the money to buy the parts needed.

Youngman forced to stop development of Lotus cars

The Saab bidder Youngman’s Lotus-plans might be jeapourdy. A change in ownership of the British brand Lotus makes the future uncertain – and right now a three month ban on development of new models is in place.

It is the motor-site EVO which reports that Youngmans partners are in trouble after the Malayzian government, who previously was the majority owner in the Lotus-Groups owner Proton, now has sold its share to the domestic industry-group DRB-HIcom. According to legislation in Malaysia, the change in ownership meant that the whole of the Proton-group now enters a low-phase where only normal sales is allowed to proceed and everything else is to be put, more or less, on hold. Except for delays of new models, the whole of the Lotus-group will now face uncertainty as to what the DRB-Hicom group’s intentions for the brand are.
- “In this though period for Lotus shall pass by the end of March, and it is by then we will know if DRB-Hicom wants to proceed with our current business plan”, Lotus-manager Dany Bahar stated to EVO during last week at the Geneva Motor show.

Younman has, according to TTELA earlier indicated that they want to produce Lotus cars in Trollhättan until the Phoenix platform will be completed. Still it is not known if the delays in Lotus will affect the plans of the chinese company. It is not yet known which model would be produced in Trollhättan.

Youngman Lotus Proton Cars met een 'ander' logo .....

Pas als de 'overname' is afgewerkt , binnen 2 weken zal DRB-HICOM bekent maken wat hun toekomst plannen met de Proton Holding zijn .
Bang afwachten wat ze met Lotus van plan zijn , verder werken of 'afstoten'.......

Met de verkoop van Proton, eigenaar van Lotus, zijn onzekere tijden aangebroken voor het Britse merk. Als gevolg hiervan loopt de complete vernieuwing van de Lotus-range gevaar en wordt het merk mogelijk verkocht. Reeds aangekondigde modellen worden achteruit geschoven.

In september 2010 had Lotus ambitieuze plannen en presenteerde het tijdens de Autosalon van Parijs niet minder dan vier compleet nieuwe modellen. Deze zouden Lotus een breder koperspubliek moeten geven en de verkoopcijfers flink op moeten krikken. We zijn nu bijna twee jaar verder en de zaken staan er bij de Britten totaal anders voor. In januari werd al bekend dat Proton probeerde om het legendarische merk, zonder succes, van de hand te doen en nu is het moederbedrijf zelf onderdeel van een grote overname.

Nieuwe eigenaar
Het conglomeraat DRB-Hicom heeft nagenoeg de helft van de aandelen van Proton in handen gekregen nadat de Maleise regering besloot haar belang in het bedrijf te verkopen. Proton wordt nu volledig doorgelicht en er zijn serieuze twijfels of Lotus haar langetermijnplanning ten uitvoer kan brengen. Onder Maleise wetgeving mag bij een bedrijfsovername drie maanden niet aan onderzoek en ontwikkeling worden gedaan, een zogenaamde lockdown. Dit heeft direct tot gevolg dat de lancering van de Exige S (waar al ruim 400 orders voor binnen zijn) en de Evora GTE enkele maanden zijn opgeschoven, verklaarde Lotus-CEO Dany Bahar aan het Britse EVO. Daarnaast is de nieuwe Esprit minstens zes maanden vertraagd en wordt deze nu niet eerder dan begin 2014 verwacht.

Duidelijkheid
Eind maart eindigt de lockdown en hoopt Lotus duidelijkheid te krijgen over haar toekomst. Volgens Bahar is het 50:50. Het zou dus zomaar kunnen dat Lotus opnieuw in de etalage gezet wordt en haar spectaculaire plannen voorlopig in de ijskast moet zetten.

Blijkbaar was de sfeer op de stand in Geneve niet echt opgetogen, kan iemand dat bevestigen/ontkrachten?
