Het begint toch MEER DAN OP MIJN HEUPEN te werken. Mijn vorige auto is verkocht sinds juli 2012 in afwachting. Toen ik de eerste delay kreeg heb ik tussenin een Exige cup gekocht verzekerd en voorzien tot januari 2013. Ondertussen zijn we de DERDE beloofde levertermijn voorbij en weet ik niet wat de VIERDE levertermijn is.

Aan de zijlijn is het makkelijk te zeggen heb geduld, maar als je er midden in zit is dat toch iets anders.

Kijk het wachten en uitkijken naar je nieuwe auto is een deel van de pret, maar ik ben nu op een punt dat dat plezier volledig weg is ! De Verhiest trackday, LOT spa, Ieper, roadtrip in mei (allemaal zaken voor hetwelk de auto uit rodage moet zijn) ik zie het allemaal in sneltreinvaart aan me voorbij gaan.

Sorry dat ik pissig reageer, maar ik ben dan ook echt pissig. Ik heb niet veel meer nodig om er de brui aan te geven en voor the second best te gaan.
Het plezier naar het uitkijken en de positieve spanning voor de wagen is vervangen door stress en dat is niet de bedoeling als je zoveel privé centjes in een auto steekt. Enfin dat is mijn opinie. Vanaf de zijlijn zou ik het idd allemaal een stuk meer relativeren, begrijpelijk.

Hebben die vertragingen niet te maken met het Bahar tijdperk waarin de productie werd stopgezet en leveranciers niet werden betaald. Als leverancier zou ik ook garanties vragen. Krijgen is iets anders, en als Lotus die niet kan geven moeten er andere leveranciers worden gezocht.

Het helpt klanten die een bestelling hebben niet vooruit en Lotus ook niet omdat ze niet kunnen leveren. Hopelijk komt er snel een einde aan dit verhaal. Het klinkt wel een beetje als een vicieuze cirkel.

Today i went up to Lotus to have a nose around the factory.

This came about as I had spoken to James Haskey some time back (during an earlier delay) and asked if it was possible to see what was going on for myself. In the end, as I'd been busy with work, we'd not followed through at the time, but now my car was (allegedly) on the line it felt like a good opportunity to get some first hand facts about was was happening at Lotus.

James was kind enough today to spend about three hours with myself and my (wide eyed) son, taking us through every step of the build process and chatting about everything that was going on. If he's reading this, then thanks again for the wonderful hospitality.

I'd preface the following remarks by saying that I'm not an automotive engineer, and this was my first time in a car factory. So I don't have anything to compare it with.

1) they are making lots, and lots, and lots of cars.
Far from what the doom mongers would have you believe, there's a lot of activity going on. Mostly Exiges and Evoras (i lost count of the number of exiges).

2) they are all sold
Whatever we might think in the UK, the cars appear to be going well. James indicated that he had no UK stock available (e.g. he can't get a car for Lotus Hedge End as a demonstrator because all the production is spoken for). Lots of cars going out to non-UK markets, e.g. China.

3) there are really focussing on quality
The drive here was evident (to naive me) up and down the production line - new looking kit at many stations, ensuring that the quality gates were met. And I think many people have remarked on the improvements they have noticed.

4) My car was there
It was where it should be in the process, and it's real, not just a piece of paperworrk.

Here's the less good news

5) there are definitely delays (up to 8 weeks in some cases) due to parts shortages
I saw a lot of cars (exiges in particular) in the inspection areas with "awaiting parts" notices on them. Mine's one of them (so if it's going to get done on time then the missing parts need to arrive soon).

However?.

6) James was _completely_ convincing on the reasons for the shortages.
James explained that the reason for the shortages is that where batches of parts are found to have faulty items, the DRB approach is to return the entire batch and get the supplier to sort it. That's different from the old Lotus approach of keeping the "passed" parts and only rejecting the specific ones that fail.

In some cases this has led to dispute with the suppliers (understandably, where a batch is rejected, Lotus would not pay), and in the extreme has led to some supplier changes.

While I can see that this is a way to build higher quality in from the ground up, it has inevitably led to delays - suppliers may have to produce slower, or another supplier might need to be sourced.

This does also explain why we hear about lotus not paying its bills (and it's always struck me as odd that multi-billion DRB with 60,000 employees couldn't just cut a few small cheques if needed). Lotus may not be paying, where the supplier has not delivered.



My overall conclusion from this visit was that (a) lotus are doing well, better than we might think (b) we're not being misled on the delay reasons - although I don't think we can draw any conclusions about whether there may be future delays (c ) we should give them a little more time.

Personally, I'd rather the car was right from the get-go. Although I'd also love to have driven the new one away from the factory.

Mooi, hopelijk heeft hij de waarheid in pacht.

Redelijk positief, als ik dat zo lees. Ook een goeie verklaring van de betalingsachterstanden. Net als de schrijver vroeg ik me af waarom zo'n enorm bedrijf niet een paar onderdelenleveranciers kon betalen. Maar als ze niks gekregen hebben... Heel erg uitgedikt in de media dus. Als ze dat nou als pers release zouden publiceren, zou er eindelijk eens duidelijkheid zijn.

Klopt, ik ben al een ruime tijd voorstander van een officieel statement van Group Lotus. Ik vind het vreemd dat deze uitblijft, maar hoop nog steeds op een positieve winding in hun negatieve spiraal.

Gelukkig sijpelt nu en dan een nieuwe positieve recensie door om de zware dippen even te verlichten ...

Even nuchter samenvatten:

Dus als 1 stuk defect is in een pak/kist/lot dan wordt heel de hoop teruggezonden? ipv ervan uit te gaan dat er in 99% van de gevallen in een lot meestal slechts 1 stuk defect is?
Dat wordt, voor zover ik weet, maar in 1 sector gedaan ... en dat is in de farmacie.
Toen ik op VOLVO werkte werd er dan iemand van Quality Control aangezet en werden alle stukken 1 voor 1 gechecked. De band moest blijven rollen want zo verdient een autobedrijf nu éénmaal zijn geld.

Ze verliezen dus liever klanten
Dit tot grote scha(n)de van hun dealernetwerk.
